Boater Education Program
HRSD and the Virginia Department of Health (VDH) encourage recreational boaters to pump their sanitary holding tanks through a summer boater education program, funded by a Clean Vessel Act grant. The goal of the program is to promote the proper disposal of wastewater from sanitary holding tanks to prevent dumping into waterways. Boaters can help keep our waterways clean by using pumpout facilities at marinas.
Interns, trained by experienced HRSD and VDH staff, visit marinas and attend water-themed festivals as part of the program. Interns teach recreational boaters about the proper disposal of their sewage, demonstrate the ease of pumping sanitary holding tanks (Type III MSD), provide free pumpout services and distribute educational materials. Each summer, approximately 6,000 gallons of wastewater is collected from boats and transported to an HRSD plant for treatment.
